Our Square Foot Garden

We finally got our act together this year and planted a garden! Woohoo!
I'd been having an urge to plant carrots for quite some time and after learning about the concept of square foot gardening, we decided to take the plunge with a modest 2ft x 4 ft garden.

So first we (I mean Jarod & Jakob) had to build the box. That was way back on Valentine's Day.

Then on President's Day we put in the vermiculite/peat moss/compost mix.

Next, figured out how many seeds to plant in each square foot.
Jakob was a good "seed coverer". I think the girls had given up by then.

And then some improvized labelling that turned out to be really cool.

We watered by hose every day. Jarod really wanted the watering to be automatic but for the moment we've agreed that it's better to HAVE to go out to see the garden every day. I think you have a better connection with the soil that way, don't you?

It was so exciting when the seedlings popped up a week or two later.
I think these pictures below are Beets, then radishes and then green onions. I think. Maybe.

The radishes were ready first, at the end of March after the Pinewood Derby.
Luckily for the rest of us we had an agreement that Jarod had to eat them all. Which he did.

Looking good! From left to right we have miniature carrots, then green onions & and an empty spot where the radishes were. Then beets and some flowers (Jakob's choice) and some more onions at the bottom right corner.

The final harvest, at the end of April. Not bad for our first (and rather experimental) efforts. I was starting to wonder whether those carrots would ever turn orange!! Anna was our champion carrot eater.

By the looks of things, it wasn't just our vegetables that grew over the last 2 and a half months!!

How much do you think you spent total on all your material. this is the only way we will ever get a garden. I am happy for you and wish it were me!

Way to go! I am impressed you grew beets. I will be even more impressed if your kids are the ones that ate them.
